First check which recorder you already have: an NVR needs a network (IP) camera, a DVR needs a wired (coax) camera. Then decide how well you need to see in the dark.

This range covers network (IP) cameras in turret, bullet and mini bullet bodies, from 3 MP to 8 MP. Brands include Hikvision, Hilook and Viper. Each camera sends video over a network cable to a recorder.
How to choose
- Resolution: 3, 4, 5 and 8 MP (megapixels) are listed. 8 MP is also called 4K, which gives more detail in recorded footage. Higher resolution needs a recorder that supports it and a larger hard drive.
- Lens: a 2.8mm fixed lens gives a wide view that suits a room or garden. The Hikvision DS-2CD2H83G0-IZS has a motorised varifocal lens, so you adjust the view without changing the lens.
- Night view: ColorVu Smart Hybrid Light models are built for colour images in low light. The Hikvision 5MP bullet uses EXIR 2.0 infrared.
- Sound: the 5MP bullet has a built-in microphone. The 4K turret adds two-way audio, so you can listen and speak.
- Weather: IP67 models, such as the 5MP bullet and the varifocal turret, are rated dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion.
What else you need
Allow one recorder channel per camera. PoE (Power over Ethernet) cameras take power and data through one cable, so check the PoE budget of your switch or recorder.
Cameras — frequently asked questions
What does PoE mean on a camera?
PoE is Power over Ethernet: one network cable carries both power and video. The recorder or switch must supply enough total PoE power for every camera.
Is 8 MP the same as 4K?
Yes, 8 MP is the resolution usually sold as 4K. It needs a recorder that supports it and more drive space than lower resolutions.
Which cameras suit outdoor use?
Look for an IP67 rating, as on the Hikvision 5MP fixed bullet and the DS-2CD2H83G0-IZS turret.
Do I need a recorder for each camera?
One recorder serves many cameras, but each camera uses one channel, so choose a recorder with enough channels.
