You only need a switch when your cameras are further from the recorder than one cable will reach, or you have more cameras than your recorder has ports for.

This range covers PoE (Power over Ethernet) switches, mobile broadband routers, and RJ45 connectors — the networking layer behind an IP CCTV or general network install.

What's in this range

PoE switches send power and data down one cable to each camera, so you skip a separate power supply per device. Choices span 4-port to 24-port, and 100Mbps (Fast Ethernet) to Gigabit speeds — for example, the Hikvision DS-3E0505P-E is a 4-port Gigabit unmanaged PoE switch, while the DS-3E0526P-E offers 24 Gigabit PoE ports. The Dahua PFS4218-16ET-240 is a managed switch with a 240W PoE budget across 16 ports. For long cable runs, the Hikvision DS-3E0109P-E/M supports PoE up to 300m over 8 ports.

Mobile broadband is covered by the Huawei E3372-325 4G USB dongle and the MifiData MF-5604 5G hotspot router, useful where a fixed internet line isn't available. RJ45 couplers extend or join Ethernet cable runs, including a waterproof outdoor version.

How to choose

  • Port count: match to your camera count plus spare ports for growth.
  • PoE budget: total wattage must cover every connected camera.
  • Managed vs unmanaged: managed switches (like the Dahua) allow more configuration; unmanaged switches are simpler.
  • Speed: Gigabit suits higher-resolution camera systems; 100Mbps suits lighter loads.
  • Cable run length: check whether a switch is rated for extended distances.

Data Comm & Networking — frequently asked questions

What does PoE mean on these switches?

PoE stands for Power over Ethernet — it sends power and data to a camera through one network cable, removing the need for a separate power supply.

What's the difference between a managed and unmanaged PoE switch?

Managed switches, such as the Dahua PFS4218-16ET-240, offer configuration options; unmanaged switches like the Hikvision DS-3E0505P-E work straight out of the box with no setup.
