First check what your cameras plug into: a wired (coax) cable needs a DVR, a network cable needs an NVR. Then pick the number of cameras you want room for.

A 4-channel DVR (digital video recorder) records up to four cameras. This range has nine models, from 1080p up to 8MP (4K).

How to choose

  • Resolution. Models are 1080p, 4MP Lite, 5MP, 5MP Lite or 8MP. Higher resolution gives finer detail, but the cameras must match the recorder to use it.
  • Camera format. The ANNKE D941BB is 5-in-1. The Prolux PXD-8204-HYK4MP is a hybrid. The Dahua XVR5104HS-I3 is penta-brid. These are built to accept more than one camera type, which suits reuse of existing cameras and cabling.
  • Power over coax. The Hikvision 8MP PoC DVR is a PoC (power over coax) model. It is designed to power compatible cameras through the coaxial cable.
  • Smart features. Several Hikvision models carry AcuSense. The Dahua XVR5104HS-I3 is WizSense with AI.
  • Format and compression. Six models list H.265, a compression method that reduces storage per recording. The Hikvision models are 1U, a slim rack-height case.

You will also need a hard drive, sized to your camera count and the days of footage you want to keep.

4CH — frequently asked questions

What does 4-channel mean on a DVR?

It means the recorder has four camera inputs, so it can record up to four cameras at once.

Do I need 8MP cameras to use an 8MP DVR?

To record at 8MP (4K), the cameras need to be 8MP too. Lower-resolution cameras will record at their own resolution.

What is a PoC DVR?

PoC stands for power over coax. The recorder sends power to compatible cameras along the same coaxial cable that carries the video.

What does a 5-in-1 or penta-brid DVR do?

These recorders are designed to accept several camera formats, which is useful if you want to keep existing cameras.
