First check what your cameras plug into: a wired (coax) cable needs a DVR, a network cable needs an NVR. Then pick the number of cameras you want room for.

This range covers 16-channel recorders. One channel takes one camera, so each unit handles up to 16 cameras. Despite the DVR path, the range mixes recorder types, so check the type first.
How to choose
- Recorder type. A DVR (digital video recorder) works with analogue cameras over coaxial cable. An NVR (network video recorder) works with IP cameras over a network. A hybrid unit, such as the Unbranded 16 Channel 5MP Hybrid DVR, is built to take more than one camera type. Check the listing for the exact mix.
- Resolution. The range runs from 1080p (full HD) through 5MP and 8MP to 8K. Your cameras and recorder should match. A higher-resolution recorder does not improve a lower-resolution camera.
- PoE. PoE (Power over Ethernet) sends power and data down one network cable. The Hikvision 16-ch 1U 16 PoE 8K NVR and the Prolux PXN-5216-16P-4KS2E have PoE ports, so cameras need no separate power supply. Check the total PoE power budget against your cameras.
- Compression. Several Hikvision models use H.265. It is a video format that generally needs less storage than older formats.
- Size. 1U means the unit is one rack unit high. It suits a rack or a shelf.
Every recorder needs a hard drive. Check the listing to see whether one is included, and size it to your camera count and retention period.
16CH — frequently asked questions
Can a 16-channel recorder run fewer than 16 cameras?
Yes. Unused channels simply stay empty, so you can start with fewer cameras and add more later.
What is the difference between a DVR and an NVR here?
A DVR records from analogue cameras over coaxial cable. An NVR records from IP cameras over a network, and the PoE models can also power them.
