First check what your cameras plug into: a wired (coax) cable needs a DVR, a network cable needs an NVR. Then pick the number of cameras you want room for.

32-channel recorders store and manage footage from up to 32 cameras on one unit. This range is all Hikvision: DVRs (digital video recorders) for coaxial-cable cameras, plus one NVR (network video recorder) for IP cameras.

What the specs mean

  • 5MP or 8MP: the resolution named in the model. More megapixels give more detail when you zoom into a recording. Your cameras must match.
  • H.265: a video compression format. It can reduce the storage each camera needs compared with older H.264.
  • AcuSense: appears in two DVR names. Check each product page for the features it covers.
  • 1U or 1.5U: case height. It matters if you are fitting the recorder into a rack.
  • 24 PoE, 8K NVR: PoE (Power over Ethernet) sends power and video down one network cable. This is the only NVR here.

How to choose

  1. Reusing coaxial cabling? Pick a DVR.
  2. Installing IP cameras? Pick the NVR.
  3. Match the resolution: 5MP or 8MP.
  4. Check the case height against your rack or shelf.
  5. Plan a hard drive, because footage needs somewhere to be stored.

32CH — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a DVR and an NVR?

A DVR records from cameras connected by coaxial cable. An NVR records from IP cameras over a network, and PoE models can also power them.

Do I have to connect 32 cameras?

No. A 32-channel recorder supports up to 32 cameras, so you can start with fewer and add more later.

Does the recorder need a hard drive?

Recorders need a hard drive to keep footage. Check each product page for what is supplied with that model.

Can I use 8MP cameras with a 5MP DVR?

Choose a recorder whose resolution rating is at least that of your cameras. Otherwise you may not get the full detail.
