First check which recorder you already have: an NVR needs a network (IP) camera, a DVR needs a wired (coax) camera. Then decide how well you need to see in the dark.

Housing
This range covers eight 4MP (4 megapixel) IP cameras. IP means the camera sends video over a network. Many models here are PoE (Power over Ethernet), so one network cable carries both power and data.
How to choose
- Turret cameras: the DS-2CD2347G2-LSU/SL (also in black), DS-2CD1343G2-LIUF/SL, DS-2CD2H45FWD-IZS and the 4 MP Smart Hybrid Light with ColorVu Fixed Turret.
- Bullet camera: the DS-2CD2T47G2H-LISU/SL, a ColorVu hybrid light model.
- Strobe light: the DS-2CD2347G2-LSU/SL adds a strobe light to its ColorVu imaging.
- Adjustable view: the DS-2CD2H45FWD-IZS has a motorized varifocal lens. A varifocal lens lets you change the field of view rather than being fixed to one angle.
- PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom): the DS-2DE4A425IW-DE and DS-2DE4425IW-DE both offer 25× zoom. Their IR (infrared) range is 50m and 100m respectively, so match it to the distance you need to cover.
What else you need
Each camera needs a recorder channel. For PoE models, check that your switch or recorder has enough PoE ports and power budget.
4MP — frequently asked questions
What does 4MP mean on an IP camera?
It describes the sensor resolution of about four million pixels. That gives more picture detail than a 2MP camera covering the same view.
Do I need a PoE switch for these cameras?
PoE models take power through the network cable, so you need a PoE switch or a recorder with PoE ports. Add up the cameras' power draw against the PoE budget.
Which camera suits longer distances?
The DS-2DE4425IW-DE lists 100m of IR, against 50m for the DS-2DE4A425IW-DE. Both are 25× PTZ cameras.
Should I choose a turret or a bullet camera?
Both types are in this range. Choose by mounting position and the lighting features you want, such as ColorVu, hybrid light or strobe.
