First check what your cameras plug into: a wired (coax) cable needs a DVR, a network cable needs an NVR. Then pick the number of cameras you want room for.

16-channel recorders store video from up to 16 cameras. This range lists network video recorders (NVRs) with 16 PoE ports, plus DVR and hybrid models for analogue systems.

How to choose

  • Camera type. An NVR records IP cameras sent over network cable. A DVR (digital video recorder) records analogue cameras. A hybrid DVR is built to accept more than one camera type.
  • Resolution. The range includes 4K and 8K NVRs, an 8MP/4K Prolux model, and DVRs from 1080p to 8MP. A recorder cannot add detail the camera does not capture, so match the two.
  • PoE. PoE (Power over Ethernet) carries power and video on one cable. On the "16 PoE" Hikvision NVRs, cameras plug straight into the recorder.
  • Size. 1U means one rack unit tall, which suits a 19-inch rack.
  • Storage. Check each product page for whether a hard drive is included. Size storage by camera count, resolution and days of footage to keep.

16CH — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an NVR and a DVR?

An NVR records digital IP cameras over a network cable. A DVR records analogue cameras, and a hybrid DVR is built to take more than one camera type.

Do I need a separate PoE switch with a 16 PoE NVR?

Cameras connected to the recorder's own PoE ports should not need one. You would only need a switch for extra cameras beyond those ports.

Do I need 4K cameras to use a 4K recorder?

No. The recorder can store lower-resolution video too, but it only records the detail the cameras capture.
