Cat6A is twisted-pair Ethernet cable rated for 10 Gbps (gigabits per second) over runs of up to 100 m. In a CCTV system it carries video from each camera to the recorder. With PoE (Power over Ethernet), it can carry power as well.
This range has three cables. The choice comes down to where the cable runs and how it is screened.
How to choose
- Outdoor run: the Connectix TruLAN C6GFFHD-F00 is an outdoor cable with a PE (polyethylene) jacket. It suits routes exposed outside the building.
- Screening: F/FTP means foil over the whole cable and around each pair. U/FTP means foil around each pair only. Screening helps reduce electrical interference. The TruLAN is F/FTP and the TruHD is U/FTP.
- Fire behaviour: the TruHD cable is LSFH (low smoke, free of halogen). It suits indoor routes where building rules ask for that.
- Length and core: the grey cable comes on a 305 m length and has a solid core. Solid core suits fixed installs into wall plates and patch panels. Stranded cable is the usual choice for flexible patch leads.
What else you need
You need RJ45 connectors or keystone jacks, and the right termination tools. You also need a PoE switch or recorder with enough ports and enough total power budget for your cameras.
CAT6A — frequently asked questions
What is Cat6A cable used for in CCTV?
It connects IP cameras to a switch or recorder, carrying video data and, with PoE, power over the same cable.
What does F/FTP mean?
It describes the screening: an overall foil screen plus foil around each twisted pair. U/FTP has foil around each pair but no overall screen.
Which cable in this range is for outdoor use?
The Connectix TruLAN C6GFFHD-F00 is listed as an outdoor network cable with a PE jacket.
