On this page

An ANPR camera costs from around £600-£1,200 as hardware alone, while a professionally installed single-lane commercial system starts from around £7,000, according to Nortech's UK pricing guide. The gap comes down to what a quote includes: camera only, camera plus controller, or a full install with software.

Automated Access gives a wider range of £5,000 to £25,000 for whole systems covering hardware, software and installation, depending on complexity and features. Lanes, barriers, software model and ongoing fees all add to the camera price, so compare quotes line by line.

How much does an ANPR camera cost in the UK?

An ANPR camera costs roughly £600–£1,200 for a basic standalone unit as hardware only, or £3,000–£5,000 per unit for a dedicated ANPR camera, according to the Nortech pricing guide. These are camera prices, not installed-system prices, which sit much higher.

Nortech says the dedicated unit removes the need for a separate server and an annual software licence.

Why the quoted figures disagree

Published ANPR system cost UK figures rarely describe the same thing. One ANPR installer's pricing page quotes £5,000–£25,000 including hardware, software and installation. Nortech puts a single lane at from around £7,000 including camera, controller and basic installation. For the basics of what the term covers, see ANPR camera meaning.

The gap is scope: camera only, camera plus controller, or a full installed system with software. When comparing an ANPR camera price UK quote, check which of those it covers.

Cheapest ANPR camera, and are they expensive?

The hardware floor is low, around £600 on Nortech's figures. A cheap camera that then needs a separate server and a software licence can end up costing more overall than a dedicated unit with those built in.

So whether ANPR cameras are expensive depends on what you must add around the camera. This is general guidance, not a quote. Your site, number of lanes and software needs will decide the real figure.

What goes into a full ANPR system quote?

A full ANPR quote has eight line items: camera, controller or server, mounting, cabling, groundworks, barrier, commissioning and software. Only some of these have published UK prices.

  • Camera hardware: a standalone unit is roughly £600–£1,200 hardware only, while dedicated ANPR cameras run £3,000–£5,000 each, per Nortech.
  • Controller or server: needed when the camera is not dedicated. Nortech says dedicated units remove the separate server and annual software licence.
  • Barrier or gate: £1,500–£3,000 per access point (Nortech).
  • Commissioning and basic installation: Nortech's from-£7,000 single-lane figure includes camera, controller and basic installation.
  • Mounting, pole, trenching and groundworks: site-dependent, so expect these to be quoted after a survey rather than from a price list.
  • Software: Nortech lists maintenance contracts at £500–£1,500 a year and optional cloud hosting at £30–£80 a month.

Power, cabling and licensing

For a PoE camera, check its stated power draw against the switch's total PoE budget, not just the per-port limit. Keep each Cat5e or Cat6 run within the standard Ethernet distance limit, and use a dedicated cable or fibre link where the pole is further away. Our guides on Cat5e cable and PoE switches cover the detail.

Ask every supplier whether software is licensed per site or per camera. We have no reliable published per-site or per-camera licence prices to quote, so compare licence terms in writing. Whoever fits the system, your own installer or electrician should work from the camera's datasheet and installation guide.

What do ANPR running costs add each month and year?

Nortech's pricing guide puts optional cloud hosting at £30–£80 a month and maintenance contracts at £500–£1,500 a year, with software updates on top.

Those figures come from the Nortech Blog, which gives no price for the updates. For larger car park schemes, Parka says the ongoing monthly software is charged on top of the setup cost.

Five-year cost of ownership

This formula covers the cost of an ANPR camera system over five years:

5-year cost = (hardware + install) + 5 × (maintenance + cloud × 12)

  • hardware: cameras, controller and any barrier equipment.
  • install: the labour to fit and commission them.
  • maintenance: the annual contract, if you take one.
  • cloud: the monthly hosting fee, multiplied by 12 to give a yearly figure. Set it to zero if you host locally.

Add a line for software updates if your supplier charges for them separately. When comparing quotes, put each supplier's hardware, installation and recurring charges into these same slots so the totals are like for like.

Treat the payback claim with caution

Nortech's guide quotes payback within 12–18 months for most commercial sites, through reduced staffing, automated parking revenue or lower insurance premiums. That is a vendor's estimate rather than a guarantee. It only holds if your site has staffing costs or parking income to replace.

Running an ANPR camera also brings data-protection duties. Our CCTV law guide and signage guide cover those.

What would a 1-, 4- and 10-lane site cost?

ANPR cost follows the number of lanes or access points more than the number of parking spaces, and a 1-lane site starts from around £7,000 installed. Parka describes a 40-space staff car park with no payment as a site that could use a single lane. Lane count depends on the entrances and exits, not the space count, so the examples below use 1, 4 and 10 lanes.

These are illustrative hardware scenarios, assuming one dedicated camera per lane. They are arithmetic from published ranges, not quotes for any specific site.

Lane count Reference figure Arithmetic on dedicated cameras
1 lane From around £7,000 installed (camera, controller, basic installation); optional barrier £1,500–£3,000 Camera alone: £3,000–£5,000
4 lanes — 4 × £3,000–£5,000 = £12,000–£20,000
10 lanes No whole-site figure published in the guides cited here 10 × £3,000–£5,000 = £30,000–£50,000

The single-lane starting point and the barrier allowance come from Nortech's UK pricing guide. The same guide gives the £15,000–£30,000 band for multi-lane sites with entry and exit cameras, and £3,000–£5,000 per dedicated ANPR camera unit.

Reading the 4- and 10-lane rows

The £12,000–£20,000 four-lane sum covers cameras only. Installation, barriers and software sit on top, which fits with the Nortech band being higher.

Parka also notes that costs rise once payment and enforcement are added, so a ticketed four-lane scheme can sit above a plain access-control one.

The ten-lane £30,000–£50,000 line is a camera-only total under the one-camera-per-lane assumption, not a site price. Ask each supplier to itemise hardware, installation and recurring charges separately, so you can compare quotes like for like rather than extrapolating from this table.

How do you make installer quotes comparable?

Ask every installer to put the same eight items in writing, so you compare like with like rather than headline totals. Published single-lane starting figures vary widely: the Nortech pricing guide says from around £7,000, while another supplier quotes £5,000 to £25,000 overall. Scope differences usually explain that spread.

Ask each installer to state:

  • Lanes and coverage: how many lanes, and whether entry only or entry and exit.
  • Camera type: a dedicated ANPR unit or a generic camera relying on software. Nortech puts dedicated units at £3,000–£5,000 each, but says they avoid a separate server and annual software licence.
  • Software licence: per site or per camera, and any annual fee.
  • Barrier or gate: included or excluded. Nortech cites £1,500–£3,000 per access point.
  • Cabling, power, groundworks and mounting: itemised, not "sundries".
  • Commissioning: and whether a tuning visit after go-live is included.
  • Maintenance term and cloud fees: Nortech cites £500–£1,500 a year for maintenance and £30–£80 a month for optional cloud hosting.
  • Data protection and signage: who completes the paperwork and who supplies the signs.

Treat these as one published guide's ranges, not a price list for your site.

Planning permission

Whether a pole, barrier or kiosk needs planning permission depends on the site and the structure. Ask the installer what they have assumed, then confirm with your local planning authority before work starts.

If you are pricing hardware yourself and using your own installer, you can browse the range or ask for a suggested system to set against their quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much do ANPR cameras cost?

According to Nortech's UK pricing guide, a basic standalone camera costs about £600–£1,200 for hardware only. A dedicated ANPR camera costs about £3,000–£5,000 per unit. A professionally installed single-lane commercial system starts nearer £7,000. Lanes, barriers, software and ongoing fees all change the total.

Why do ANPR price quotes vary so much?

Quotes often cover different things. Nortech's "from £7,000" is for one installed lane, while Automated Access gives £5,000–£25,000 for whole systems. One quote may cover only the camera, another a camera with controller, and another a full install with software. Compare like for like before judging price.

Can I buy an ANPR camera?

Yes. Basic standalone units are sold as hardware alone from about £600–£1,200, per Nortech. Dedicated ANPR cameras cost more, at about £3,000–£5,000 each. Buying hardware alone leaves installation, software and tuning to arrange separately, so check what your site needs first.

What is the cheapest ANPR camera, and is it good value?

The hardware floor is low, around £600–£1,200 for a basic standalone unit. As general guidance, a cheap camera that needs a separate server, annual licence and tuning can cost more overall. Nortech notes a dedicated ANPR camera removes the need for a server and annual software licence.

Are ANPR cameras expensive?

Compared with a standard CCTV camera, usually yes. A dedicated ANPR unit at £3,000–£5,000 and a full system of £5,000–£25,000 (Automated Access) are significant outlays. Cost is justified when plate reading must be reliable, but obtain itemised quotes covering hardware, installation, software and running costs.
